American bison

Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA

Buffalo in San Francisco? Yes, indeed. The first buffalo were brought to Golden Gate Park in 1891. As far as I've been able to determine, there has been a small herd in the park since that date. I've enjoyed seeing these majestic bison since I was a teenager. When I arrived at the site, they were nowhere to be seen. Walking around the many acres of their enclosure, I found them in a smaller hillside paddock at the back. It was a delight just to stand and enjoy their presence.

Amazing creatures and very well presented here Michael. The luminous/IR effect of the sky really sets the atmosphere.

Thanks all. Trav, I used the Canon 100-400mm zoom and I guess 330mm turned out to be the framing I liked. I'd like to take credit for the low angle pov, but the buffalo were on a low hill. I was behind a chain link fence which had a more traditional corral fence of vertical wood posts and horizontal cables a few feet inside it. Finding a pov where I could shoot through the chain link and avoid the posts/cables of the inner fence was a bit of a challenge. But hey, the buffalo were very patient with me while I figured it all out. -Michael

What lens, Michael? 330mm? It was good to get yourself out and...and as odd as this may sound, I suppose they were as interested in seeing you as you were in seeing them.

A fair balance.

That is a striking image. I like the clouds and dark sky. Having shot quite a bit of B&W film, this looks a lot like a red filter to me. I like it. They are amazing creatures. Jim H.
