Memorial Church

Stanford, CA

Danny Boy kept the extremely well-lit front of the church from being blown out by holding his hand in front of part of the lens for a few seconds.

I've tortured myself on just such questions....the light source isn't that bad...really. The Burning, not so good.....lol

I think it was fine the way it was.

Next time. Best Wishes, Traveller

Traveller, I agree about the crop, so I've done something different.

I've tried making the left-hand light go away, as if it were behind the arch. Now that I see it on the web, though, I think the dodging and burning was a bit clumsy.

The original entry is here: http://www.pbase.com/breuter/image/115206053

This is a good lesson for me in composition. I bet if I had moved a couple of feet to the left, I could have had that light source hidden behind the arch naturally.

Nico: yep, I was setting up to do bracketing when Danny Boy demonstrated the masking technique. For fullest disclosure, there were a few tries before we got a good image. I think he started with his hand and then used his camera body.

Nicely done. Love night shots with their different colors. Thanks for the information about covering part of the lens during the shot.

No, not further cropping in my opinion....its too tight, like a restrictive belt or something....the greater expanse of blacks sets it in context here. Traveller

Very good - and the lighting tips are helpful too. Thanks! (Were you not tempted to take bracketed exposures and trying to merge those using hdr tools?) Regards Nico

Cropped per Danny Boy's suggestion:

Feedback?

Cropping just a little bit off the bottom and to the left would bring the round window to the lower right third and remove the arch-light, giving a fade-to-black effect. Dodging the arch-light a skosh would give the same effect too, without losing the detail. I really like the way you bring out the contrast of the facade and the shadow here.

I like this, Barry. The dark, dark blacks with teh details in the front... Lovely.
I like the tip, too. Thanks. ~Lydia

Creative exposure technique! Thanks for sharing that tip. I know at some point in the future I'll make use of it.

This turned out very well.
