Thanks, Grant.

This is in central Wyoming. But these are supposed to be fairly common over a large part of the US.

For some reason, I see a lot of jumping spiders in my home office, but not this species. But at work, we seem to have more of this species. Maybe these guys prefer drier prairie areas while the kind I see at home prefer people's yards.

I like the little ones I get at my house, but these larger ones make for better photos because they're more colorful and - well - larger :) Jim H.

Geez Jim,

Where do you live that these are just running around? Nice shot BTW.

By way of an update. I found her the other day in my bathroom. So I put her in a jar and took her back to work where we released her outside the building where she was originally found. Hopefully, she'll do well. It's going to be close to freezing tonight, potentially with some snow. Maybe she'd have been better off foraging in my bathroom ;-) Jim H.

Thanks everyone! But it's a she. You can tell by her palps which are far smaller than a male's would be. But I'll admit that her punk-rock "hair do" is a bit confusing. A guy here at work said it looks like Dilbert's Boss' hair :)

The chelicerae (mouthparts) are metallic green on this species due to an iridescent/interference effect, much like some butterflies and beetles.

The background for this shot was an old DVDR that failed to burn. The colors from the DVD are also due to interference from what amounts to a diffraction grating created by the spiral "groove" in the DVD.

I kept "herding" her onto the DVD for the shots, but she was most uncooperative, mostly turning her back end to me at all times. When she was facing the camera, she often jumped onto the lens or the flash heads. She did that repeatedly. Finally, she made a jump, and I've got absolutely no idea what direction she went, let alone where she got off to. So she's running loose in my totally messy office right now.

If I see her again, I may try photographing her more, but I'll also try to move her out into the yard. She's one of the few of this particular species that I've seen around here. But I've seen two this year, so maybe they're moving into the area.

I'll second that... he's really ugly Jim :-)
I like the background colors. What specific light is that reflecting off it's orbs?
Since I don't know what those are... to me they're just orbs. lol Markjay

Looks like an "it" to me. Love the OOF colors, fantastic background. And a fascinating and amusing picture: Looks like an insect version of "the Scream" lol

Well done, Jim. He's really ugly. ~Lydia

PS Please don't tell him I said that.

Thanks, Traveller. Yes. The two macro lenses I've got are the EF-S 60mm and the MP-E65. This was taken with the MP-E set to 2X. It's a really fun lens! Jim H.

So Jim, you have the 60 and the 65 macro lens? (Utterly fabulous image, BTW) Traveller
