It's very kind of you, Sharon, to have made the effort of trying yet another version of my image; nevertheless, it lacks--again--the sense of place and space (and height), so I prefer to leave it "as is". Thanks for your friendly comment! -- db.

Here's another thought on cropping - try cropping up from the bottom to just below the capitals of the columns. You will end up with a panorama shaped image that still gives you a sense of place without the distracting darker area of the street. I am not sure if this is a good solution either but another way to look at a very interesting image. It makes me think of a ship with tv antenna masts and a lovely figurehead. Good work, Daniel! ~Sharon

Thanks, Olaf, for stating your opinion (which I find especially interesting given your professional background): your words describe very much my own feelings about the two versions and my own doubts about which one of them to chose for the Challenge. That's why I leave this image--for the time being--untouched in Exhibition, without deleting yet the one in Pending which has (as Eric correctly foresaw, IMO) more impact but offers much less perception of place. In this sense, your remark does not help me to make a decision, but confirms my confusion as does your rectification (?), Eric, for which I am equally grateful... ;-) -- db.

yes, maybe, this does work better on second look.

It is hard to say if I prefer this or the cropped version. They are both good. Here we see the architecture in its setting. The setting can be seen as a positive addition to the shot - or - as a distraction from the main subject. The cropped version is more "focused" and emphasises the more abstract qualities of the subject. My conclusion must be that the two versions are different, express different things, but one can't be said to be better than the other, without knowing what you as a photographer want to express.

Thanks a lot, Eric, for your kind remark and your suggestion. I've posted such a crop in Pending looking forward to receiving many different opinions on which version you prefer (and why): <http://www.pbase.com/cslr_challenge/image/112023017 -- db.

similar to the first, but I think it works better because of the various coloured substrates that are reflecting the light, possibly cropping the street out completely would have created more mystery and impact to the shot.
