Thanks much Carole, these are in a climate controlled greenhouse so they have always looked the same to me during any season. They might vary depending on the season in the wild though.

I like the closeup better too Brent - what an interesting looking plant and lovely too. Are these winter colors or do they always look like this? CJ

Thanks much all, glad version two seems to be agreeable. Fun often results when twisting on a macro lens :-)

Great cactus, really like all those red spines. I did see the original and have to say that, regardless of the challenge theme, I prefer this one. I too like the shallow DOF. Y'all are making me want to shoot macro. -Michael

Super, Brent. I liked the first version, but this is even better. Fantastic use of DOF. Compliments! Nico

you are not weird. This is better!! While I liked the green in the background, this is just OUT there with the subject and I like it. Alot. Penny Street

Well, I didn't see the original, but I like this one a lot, Brent. The DOF is very good.

Jeez Brent now I'm wondering where in Seattle these things can be seen.. I missed them. Anyway, this one really works well. The detail in the foreground stands out incredibly from the lovely bg bokeh. I need a full frame digital camera to get back to meaningful control over focus. -tv

Thanks much for the feedback all :-) I decided to replace the original with a different image of the same cacti. This one will be less questionable as to which color dominates and I kind of like the freaky quality of the bokeh that looks a bit like mold spores (yeah I know I'm kind of weird).

Never mind if the green cactus is questionable in relation to the challenge theme. Without even thinking about the challenge theme, I'd prefer this cropped down to just the lower half or two thirds. I tried it with the scroll bar and to my eye it improves the composition - that fuzzy green ball is just a distraction!

Clever is Good....of course, Michael is the final say, (in everything....lol), but I say it's fine if you want my opinion. Traveller

Ah you guys are silly, these CACTUS would not be too happy in an aquarium :-) I know this is a red "or" green challenge, but shot this keeping in mind Micheal's comment on Sharon's image here:http://www.pbase.com/cslr_challenge/image/106959364
where he explained both colors are okay as long as one dominates the other. I purposely rode a fine line here making only the red in focus and to my thinking; dominant. But even if it is totally OOF that green cactus in the background may still be too prominent with its color?
I'll leave this totally up to Michael or the group consensus as to whether this one should stay or be scooted off to pending. I'm totally fine either way, and I realize now this image could start us down a slippery slope of too many images with both colors even if I thought I was being a little clever with the focus to be in compliance :-)

Brent did you miss the "or". Nice reds and greens from the aquarium? Lovely bokeh from that Mark II. -tv

Yes, Penny, he is distinctly showing off now....lol.

Great and....interesting image. Traveller

Are those some interesting fruit to go with the kiwi or is it sea anenome? I like the balance of color and the dof -you're showing off that camera nicely. Penny Street
