Feeding Time

Boulder, CO

We have a bird feeder in our front yard, which attracts large numbers of small brown birds. But it doesn't only supply those birds with food. The birds are messy eaters, so the squirrels get to eat the copious leftovers on the ground. Next door's cat has also benefited by making off with one or two of the birds. And today, this raptor also made a tasty snack of one of the small birds, which it took up to a tree to eat. I felt a bit guilty about that, but not too guilty to grab my 20D with the 70-200 F2.8L IS and 1.4X converter, and get some shots.

As for the bird ID, I posted this and others in a web gallery http://anorcross.smugmug.com/gallery/6756724_afcCr/1/431476859_JCwpd#431476783_YxbQ6) to my local neighborhood listserv asking for an ID. The majority opinion was that it is a juvenile sharp-shinned hawk, with a minority saying it might be a Cooper's hawk.

Thanks everyone. For PP, I cropped, applied lab saturation (convert to lab color--apply image at 50% soft light--convert back to rgb), applied some shadow/highlight correction (mostly highlight), local contrast enhancement, reduced to web size, used OmniEdge sharpen action on a layer at 50% opacity, and converted to sRGB.

Wonderful catch Alastair! Seeing the great results you got with that 70-200 and the converter, I'd like to chuck my 70-300 IS USM and buy that setup....... if I could talk my hubby into it........ which is not likely! :-) Great sharpness and color - did you have to do much PP on this? CJ

Terrific shot, Alastair! My guess is a female Redtail hawk, yes? .. or? We have a similar feeding station in our yard and occasionally have a raptor come for dinner. Yumm, that's a drumstick in its mouth, ha! Nice catch. Cheers, -mikey

Amazing shot Alastair, I would have done the same thing - although
I don't think as well as you did!
