A white board off screen would have made much better layout. And diminished the shadows behind the people. Maybe a off shot low light would eliminate the contrast of dark and light hues as well. Usually the flash is what gives the red eyes and the dear in headlight shots.Ya I would say your focal point of light is what didn't give you a good shot. Use of screens and light manipulation can pull pictures like this together much more smooth.
