Hi Chris,
Chances are that it is one of the many thousands of different ichneumon wasps. They parasitize other insects by laying eggs on their larvae. You can usually tell if they are icheumon by their antenna which tend to be long and twitch around as though they are using them like feelers. The "stinger" on many of these insects is actually an ovipositor used by the female to lay eggs - sometimes by stabbing into wood or plant leaves to get to where the larvae of other insects are located.

found black looking wasp today 19/7/2010, in east barnet, london, uk. with orange & black legs with a very long stinger. would like to know species & orign.

yes , really rapid wing moves, right?
they kill spiders, some of them have big stinger, i think, or it might be another specie.
they are not afraid, smart and easily come on your fingers.

We have tons of these in Wisconsin, I believe it is a cricet wasp.

seen this wasp today and I am trying to ID it. Havent had much luck. I would like to know what it is.
