There are 2 loon families this year at this pond- one family with 2 hatched chicks and one still nesting. I was kayaking and taking photos- they are quite used to boats and cameras, but I was using a long lens too. There was quite a commotion when a Bald Eagle showed up. It was chased away by a small bird, but the entire loon population was calling and protecting their chicks. One sequence in this series shows how a chick gets on it's parent's back. It nudges under the wing. Sometimes the adult will carry their chicks under their wings- even diving with them, I am told. (Thanks to Jim Block.)
