Is this cost cutting by Royal Mail? Maybe a cunning plan to camouflage remote post boxes so avoiding out-of-the way collections?

No. It’s no longer a postbox, but now someone’s letter box instead. Postie won’t know if he’s coming or going!

That's like ours! When Ireland got her independence, the old Royal Mail boxes were simply painted green and are still going strong.
