A year ago today I was in a motel lobby in Manchester, TN eating mini-bagels with cream cheese and hearing
for the first time about a hurricane named 'Katrina'. I was heading south.

Nine hours or so later in Florida we hit the vanguard of the storm, driving through two or three "arms" of heavy rain
and buffeting winds that brought us to a crawl on the freeway.
