Patchly distribution in Africa south of the Sahara and West-India. Formerly also North Africa.
The following 2 subspecies are being recognized:
Panthera leo leo - West-India (Gujarat), West- and Northcentral-Africa. Formerly also North Africa;
Panthera leo melanchaita - East- and Southern Africa.
