The following 5 subspecies are being recognized:
Curucca melanocephala melanocephala - South-Europe to West-Turkey and Northwest-Africa;
Curucca melanocephala leucogastra - Canary Islands;
Curucca melanocephala valverdei - South-Morocco and Western Sahara;
Curucca melanocephala momus - Northeast-Egypt to extreme Southcentral-Turkey;
Curucca melanocephala norrisae - Faiyum (Northcentral-Egypt).
