The following 2 subspecies are being recognized:
Alle alle alle - Baffin Island (Canada) to Novaya Zemlya (Northwest-Russia). Winters to West-Europe and Northeast-North America;
Alle alle polaris - Frans Josef Land (Russia) to St. Lawrence Island (Alaska). Wintes to Barents Sea.
