Europe, North-Africa, Asia south through Indonesia to New Guinea.

The following 7 subspecies are being recognized:
Alcedo atthis ispida - British Islands to West-Russia, Iberian and Baltic Peninsulas;
Alcedo atthis atthis - Southeast-Europe and North-Africa to Northwest-India;
Alcedo atthis bengalensis - Lake Baikal and North-India through East- and Southeast-Asia;
Alcedo atthis taprobana - South-India and Sri Lanka;
Alcedo atthis floresiana - Lesser Sundas (Bali to Timor and Wetar);
Alcedo atthis hispidoides - Sulawesi to Moluccas, New Guinea and Bismarck Archipelago;
Alcedo atthis salomonensis - Bougainville and Solomon Islands.
