The following 3 subspecies are being recognized:
Molothrus ater artemisiae - Interior West-Canada and West-USA. Winters to Baja and South-Mexico;
Molothrus ater obscurus - Coastal-Alaska, Canada, USA and Northwest-Mexico. Winters to South-Baja and Oaxaca;
Molothrus ater ater - Southeast-Canada, East- and Central-USA and Northeast-Mexico. Winters to Gulf Coast, Florida and South-Mexico.
