The following 4 subspecies are being recognised:
Uraeginthus bengalus bengalus - Senegal to Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Uganda and West-Kenya;
Uraeginthus bengalus brunneigularis - South-Somalia, Kenya and Northeast-Tanzania;
Uraeginthus bengalus ugogoensis - South-Kenya and Tanzania;
Uraeginthus bengalus katangae - Northeast-Angola to South-Congo and North-Zambia.
