Died at Coal Harbor Cornwall.jpg

On Sept 3, 1864 a futile Union assault at Cold Harbor, Virginia cost 3-7,000 lives, in a losing battle that one Union officer called "murder, not war." Back in Cornwall they got the name wrong, but they were right about the main thing: their boys had died there. Vermont lost more men in that conflict, proportionally, than any other Union state. Almost every town has a Civil War monument.
