Like snow, ice takes many forms, some of them aesthetic and others transformative in ways that go beyond aesthetic appreciation. In New England, ice storms can be catastrophic, taking out power lines and blocking transportation and stranding tens of thousands. When I was young, a half century ago, the ice storm zone seemed to be around Albany; with climate change, it has apparently moved northward, and we're in it.
