Getting to the Columbia Icefields used to take a lot longer when I was a kid - the roads were gravel and often washed out or blocked by avalances in spots. I used to spend the summers on the Icefields with my dad when he gave tours in the old track bombodiers. Our camp was on the south lateral moraine and the ice used to reach up that high!
