Newfoundland Scuba Diving, June 2008

On June 28th I traveled to Newfoundland for a week of diving with Ocean Quest ( http://www.oceanquestadventures.com/ )

The diving as always there was superb, visibility was outstanding.. and only on one day was the wind a factor. We decided on just one dive that day but could have squeezed another one in if we pushed it.

Water temp ranged from 35-37F at depth, to 45F+ hanging on the line. With excellent visibility, "warm" hang time, little/no current.. it made deco diving very relaxing. In some shots you can see the shadow of the dive boat while I was shooting at a depth of 90fsw, or in some cases the outline of the entire bow of the shipwreck. This is wreck diving at it's best.. beautiful wrecks, full of marine life, and clear (if somewhat occasionally chilly!) water.

The pics here are from the wrecks:
PLM-27( http://www.oceanquestadventures.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=29:plm-27&catid=18:shipwrecks&Itemid=14 )
Lord Strathcona ( http://www.oceanquestadventures.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=31:lord-strathcona&catid=18:shipwrecks&Itemid=14 )
Saganaga ( http://www.oceanquestadventures.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=30:saganaga&catid=18:shipwrecks&Itemid=14 )
Rose Castle ( http://www.oceanquestadventures.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=32:rose-castle&catid=18:shipwrecks&Itemid=14 ).

All were sunk by torpedos from German U-boats in WWII and are sitting fully upright. I didn't identify the pics with the wrecks because some have cool little things scattered on them that I don't want to inadvertently reveal the location and have them stolen. Too many artifacts are taken off these wrecks, and should be left for future divers to see!

A story from one of our dives to the Saganaga.. apparently the cod are spawning in June.. and the females get rather large, and.. well.. rather "protective". As we passed over one of the collapsed deck areas, maybe 20fsw or so above the wreck.. I was "attacked" lol.. I actually had to punch at this 3ft female cod to get her away from me. My dive buddy saw the whole thing, and was useless to help.. he was laughing so hard he couldn't see through the sea water in his mask!!
