Chlorociboria aeruginascens7244.jpg

Westmoreland Sanctuary

This piece of rotting wood is the habitat of several life forms. The green color is the effect produced by the mycelium of Chlorociboria aeruginascens. By late summer and fall it may produce gorgeous cup-like turquoise fruiting bodies along the wood. There is also some white mycelium which may produce a fruiting body - but of what species no one can tell. There are also tiny translucent yellow cups on both sides of this wood. They appear to have remnants of a covering on their edges - or perhaps 'hair.' They are undoubtedly Ascomycetes, but I cannnot determine the genus, let alone the species yet. On the other side there is a slime 'mold' - Lycogala epidenrum, or Wolf's Milk Slime.
