Rhodocollybia maculata (a.k.a. Collybia maculata)

Fahnestock State Park, NY

Spotted Collybia is a member of the Tricholoma family. This fruiting body is a large, incurved to wavy-margined, fleshy whitish mushroom with reddish spots. As can be seen in this photo, the gills are whitish, crowded, spotted and barely attached to attached. The spore-print is pinkish-tannish. The hollow stalk is brittle. Although this mushroom is edible, it is bitter-tasting. It is found growing on conifer debris and stumps, such as hemlock.
