There are four commonly seen forms of hypomyces: chrysospermus , hyalinus, lactifluorum and luteovirens.
Hypomyces chrysospermus ('Golden Hypomyces') primarily favors certain boletes, such as Boletus chrysenteron ('Cracked-cap Bolete') and Gyroporus casteneus ('Chestnut Bolete'), both of which were plentiful along the section of the Apalachian Trail that we walked. This ascomycete passes through three stages to maturity and is visibly seen as color changes from white to yellow to rust. The center bolete exhibits primarily the first white mold stage. The bolete on the right exhibits the powdery yellow second stage of Hypomyces chrysospermus. All three stages can be seen in the photo above on the first bolete on the left. Logan called this find "Tri-hypomyces" and he is right-on!
