This brown-spored fruiting body is the deadly poisonous Galerina autumnalis! These specimens were a bit larger than we usually encounter, but they are nevertheless the same deadly mushroom. Note the small, thin ring high up on the stipe. Fortunately, the relatively puny size of this LBM (Little Brown Mushroom) probably helps deter folks from eating it.
To the untutored eye, this wood-growing mushroom might be confused with the edible Armillaria mellea. However, except perhaps for the substrate, I personally see no similarities to warrent confusion between the two. (Compare this specimen with the photo of Armillaria mellea and see if you agree)! The real danger may be that you might inadvertently mix one in with your basket of edible Armillaria mellea and consume it . That is why we are supposed to keep edibles separate from inedibles!
