06/12/10 Westmoreland Sanctuary. Bedford, NY

Dave Rose was our walk leader this day and he brought alone a couple of friends and co-workers from the March of Dimes where he is the archivist. While still early in the season, we did pretty well in the mushroom count department. I'll try to remember everything we found: 4 different myxomycetes or 'slime molds': the white ceratiomyxa fruticulosa, the red raspberry slime, Tubifera ferruginosa, the bright pink globes of Lycogala epidendrum and brown fruiting bodies of Stemonitis fusca. As for 'jellies', we found Tremella mesenterica and a gorgeous young fruiting of Exidia glandulosa. Also on wood we found a plethora of Megacollybia platyphylla and Pluteus cervinus, some Schizophyllum commune, the split gill, Daldina concentrica, Trichaptum biformis and its parasite, Phaeocalicium polyporeum, several different crusts, Mycena galericulata, Mycena leiana, Chlorociboria aeruginascens, Scutellinia scullata and Artomyces pyxidata. Tremellodendron pallidum, the coral-like jelly fungus, was also seen emerging from the ground. The most spectacular discovery was of several Phaeolus schweinitzii in different stagesof maturity. As for terrestrial mushrooms, we came across a few different mild tasting russulaqs including unidentified species of Hygrocybe, Russula mariae, Boletus chrysenteron, some of which were hypomycized, Boletus maculatus and Leccinum scabrum. The most appreciated find of the morning was a huge fruiting of oyster mushrooms, Pleurotus ostreatus, decorating a fallen beech log.
