Over at Pier 39 in The City, sea lions started hauling out in 1989 after the Loma Prieta earthquake. Twenty years later, they number over 1,500 and the local news recently referred to the colony as an infestation. Boat owners are often blocked from their boats and they can't do anything about it because of the marine mammal protection act. Tourists like to photograph them.
