Appartment of Resettlement Estate in 1960's

Hong Kong Museum of History

I had lived in this kind of appartment when I was a child.
A 10-metre-square appartment usually housed a family of 4 to 6.
The rent was about HK$14 (US$1.8) a month
but the monthly average family income was HK$150 (US$19) at that time.
A private kitchen, a bathroom and even a water tap were considered luxuries.
Instead, public facilities were available on each floor.
Foreign tourists visiting the apartment complexes referred to them as "prisons".

As the living standard improved, this kind of 7-storied building
is gradually replaced by bigger and modern housing estates.
Because the government is going to demolish Shek Kip Mei Estate,
resettlement estates will be vanished in the coming years.

It recalled me some memories when I was a small child. Brothers, sister and myself slept in lower deck head to toes. Strangely, we did not complain and felt warm unlikely nowsdays many kids stayed in their living room after meals without talking much with each other. Thanks CM

A beautiful capture of the part of life that came to be just history now. V

A very interesting place, it looks very nice but like you said it is very small for a family. Nice picture! V

I bet this is absolutely nostalgic. I've only seen this in movies but now I know a great photographer has lived in it. v
