This kitchen of a typical Hakka village house equips a fireplace on the right-hand side.
The wooden tank on the fireplace is a rice steamer.
The red sign right above the fireplace is a “Spirit seat of Kitchen God”.
Traditionally every Chinese household would have the spirit seat above the fireplace in the kitchen
and this tradition is still practiced in some villages.
The Hakka people came originally from north of the Yellow River.
A series of migrations brought them to the southern Chinese provinces and Hong Kong.
