This location appears to be in Cheakamus Canyon just south of the townsite of Garibaldi. The townsite is said to have been abandoned due to the potential of a natural rubble dam shifting and causing the lake to flood the town (ref Wikipedia). This photo location is alongside Hiway 99 which was a pretty sleepy roadway at the time with occasional traffic in mid-summer.
Of interest is BCR 640 the lowest number M420W on the roster and in the original two tone paint scheme. The locomotive was delivered in 1973 and later wrecked on the Takla Sub in 1994 along with a number of cabless M420B's.
The trailing BCR 631 C-420 had recently been painted in the short lived 'Hockey Stick' paint scheme, so named due to the diagonal stripes near the roofline forming the likeness of a hockey stick. The paint scheme was timed for the Rail Company being re-named BC Rail and for Expo 86, the World's Fair held in Vancouver with a Transportation theme. The paint scheme was later iterated to a less complex red, white and blue scheme.
