July 5 2014 finds a Union Pacific Z train passing below Mt Shasta in Northern California. The train will pass through a cut and then the old SP siding of Cougar on it's way to Klamath Falls and then Portland Oregon.

The peak of Mt Shasta is at 14,163 ft as per the USGS, Shastina is to the right at 12,329 ft. and is considered an overlapping cone of the main volcano. The mountain's last eruption is estimated at 300 years ago with an average cycle of 600 to 800 years. The numerous glaciers on the mountain do melt or shift on occasion and cause mud flows down the mountainside.

Of interest is the glaciers on the north side of Mt Shasta, being near summer solstice the sun is warming the glaciers, but the altitude prevents them from completely melting. Written permission is required to reproduce any material contained in this website.
