September 3 2004:
Crossing the Canal

We usually associate high bridges with high terrain or wide rivers, but this one here at Rendsburg in northern Germany is somewhat different. The land here is as flat as a pancake, but the Nord Ostee (or Kiel) Canal sees some very large ships, and as a result the railway north from Hamburg towards Denmark has to gain a considerable height to make clearance for the sea-going vessels.

Here, a train heads from the south and is soon to cross the canal, but immediately after that, it will descend in a spiral to lose height, so that it will find itself at Rendsburg’s railway station at normal level.

Great shot! You managed to capture the landscape pretty well here. It's always nice with some kind of short story behind (below) photos like this, so thanks for taking your time to enlighten us a bit :)

Descend in a spiral? I'd like to see that image!

Full of interest and getting it on the curve makes for a pleasing shot.
