May 24 2004:
On the way through

Bagshot, Surrey

I’ve been able to establish that my Great Great Grandmother travelled up from Kenn, near Exeter in the 1840’s or 1850’s to start a new life in London. This 170 mile journey was made by stagecoach and would have taken four days. During her final afternoon on the trip, the young Frances Laskey would have passed through Bagshot along the old High Street here.

The Three Mariners pub apparently is named after the three ex-sailors that owned the establishment in its early years; and it is also claimed that many of the timbers were once part of a ship, despite the sea being fifty miles away!

Nice photo and interesting story Ray. But 50 miles from the sea is not far at all. Not for Americans anyway.

Nice image indeed, it is nice to see a little history behind a building, adds a little character!
Actualy on a bank holiday it still can take 4 days to get from Exeter to London.
