Accomidations at The New Otani, Kaimana Beach, San Souci Beach Hotel in Waikiki. A great place to stay if you want to relax and enjoy walking out onto the beach. The hotel has great views of the Ocean and Diamond Head. Just a short walk one block to hop on the Trolley (Blue Line Diamond Head Shuttle for $5.00 to get to Diamond Head) or The Bus ($2.00) will get you around most of the island.
From the airport a taxi will run about $38.00 to the hotel. The shuttle may be less expensive but you will need to call and they will tell you where the pick up will be and time (which can mean you have to walk with your luggage and be on their schedule).
To get to Pearl Harbor call VIP Trans and for a $12.00 round trip. If you plan on Pearl Harbor ask the hotel activity desk when the cruise ships get it as times will fill up fast and you could wait 3 hours once you are there for your tour. Two tips are get there before they open and wait in line and do not take any bags or purses (not even a camera bag or case/cover) as nothing is allowed. So carry your camera and stuff your pockets. Do NOT leave anything in your car as it may not be there when you return. Once past security you can purchase snack items and there are several gift shops-get a bag and unload your pockets. You will get a tour number ticket that list the time of your tour. The tour begins with a 25 minute movie that you must attend. I do not recommend this for young children as some parts can be graphic. The tour boat then departs to the USS Arizona Memorial. The boat fills up fast and all seats are filled every trip.
The Waikiki Aquarium and The Natatorium War Memorial are next to the hotel. The Hololulu Zoo is about two blocks away as well.
I did not rent a car for my time on Ohau. Walking to shops, beaches and sites was pleasent. There are plenty of sidewalks and places of interest for families within easy walking distance.
Get a Trolley Map Guide and The Bus Route Maps and carry them with you. If you buy to much to carry or are to tired you can hop on The Bus or Trolley to take you back to the hotel. The Trolley 1 Day Pass is $25.00 or $45.00 for Four-Day Pass-well worth the price considering a rental cost $100.00 per day plus gas and parking. The Bus also offers multi-day passes.
