Siedels.. my mother Ruth Hattle worked there for 52 yrs.. good friends with Martin and M Siedels.. I and my brother worked there during the summers.. Holy Angels, then Assumption high.. I started work at Siedels when I was 14.. my mother would bring me to the store to sit and draw cause she didn't have a babysitter.. good times.. remembering Woolworths where they had the counter to have lunch at.. the 5 and dime store.. Majestic across the street was a beautiful place before it went down the tubes.. sad.

I'm originally from East St. Louis and I grew up in Washington Park. I attended Manners Elementary,Lansdowne Jr high and East Side.I come home once a year and I ride throughout the city with a look of dismay. How could such a beautiful place fall so short. I wonder should I have stayed and what could we have done to make it a better place is it our fault or is it someone else's. I agree with a lot of people who has spoke on this conversation once a East St Louisian is always a East Saint Louisan that will never change.

I was raised in East St. Louis from the age of 6 years old to 12 years old. I attended John Robinson Elementary School, but continued my education across the River in St. Louis County, Berkeley. My memories of East St. Louis are rather vague, but I remember our Christmases as a family, our Easter Sundays, going to church with my mother and father, my little school concerts! I had a lot of fun as a child and don't have many bad memories of East St. Louis, but it breaks my heart to see what it's become. It's just rather sad.

I grew up and East St. Louis, and never am I ashame to tell anyone I'm from East St. Louis. I know that the city is in need of improvement oon many levels.. Our educators, our politicians, our police, mayors and parents also. But it's not the only city that has these problems. it's only widely broadcasted because it is a city of mainly blacks, so we let the media sterotype us and feed off of it. This is a valuable city, and they want it but they first must have everyone vacate it. so they can do what they have always planned. make a profit. I too have left the city, but it is to protect my children from all the violent at the schools and nobody caring to educate our children. But I do still visit frequently and do plenty of business in my city

I can't wait to come home again after 28 years living in California. Some of the things still looks the same since I'd left a long time ago, the schools except Clark (formally was Jr high when I was there 30 yrs ago), ESL High, Lincoln. The neighborhood where I'd use to grew up in are gone, but I've still have alot of family and friends....can't wait to see them all soon. If they want to show what have East St. Louis done now, they should show the redevelopment of Washington and St. Clair counties.
