I grew up in East Gary(Lake Station) in 1953 and moved to Gary in 1958. The area around 45th and Broadway. As the steel industry suffered, so did the general economy as more business moved south of 53rd Avenue, and into a more stable envorionment. At one time I believe USS and their other steel partners employed 45,ooo workers. In 1979, I believe the total was around 4500....hard to sustain a city with only 10 per cent of the people working. Forced bussing from the north to the south, a black mayor, declining house values, increase in crime, increase of taxes...how can you justify this is a place to raise a family. Smaller towns east and west survived because without public transportation and people willing to work, a town can survive. No one wants to work in Gary...just send them a check, give them a liquor store, and offer free transportation...the makings of disaster/

Real reasons for Gary's abondonment:
1) The city was founded on steel industry and fell during steel's decline.
2) Wealthy Whites (and some Blacks) left Gary when the first Black mayor was elected.
3) Shopping malls with good parking attracted business from downtown Gary.
4) Most Gary citizens took jobs in Chicago and other areas outside Gary.
5) Most of Gary's homes and buildings were built over 50 years ago and decayed.
I doubt Gary will ever be DECENT but I have many great memories from the 1960's and 70's.

It hurts to see the place I was born in such bad shape but we all know the willie lynch sydrome took place. As soon as a black man got into office it was put into effect and still being applied. Young brothers wake up you are not your own enemy, give up this affliction to be self destuctive by putting together so called gangs bent on selling drugs to kill off your own offspring.United we can Stand but Divided we will Fall not one but All. I know its hard but if you can only realize the power in numbers you would look after your fellow brother. Put the trust back in each other and be your brothers keeper. May god open our eyes so we may see more clearly.....
