I grew up on 4th and Van Buten St. I went to Jefferson, John Vohr, and Horace Mann. As kids, we could play outdoors and nothing happened to us. We were at Jackson Park a lot for swimming, baseball, ice skating. The Light House Restaurant was on the corner from us on 5th Ave.The A& P was across the street. The bakery by Holy Angels on 5th and Tyler was Sokits. Yummy! We had the first Mc Donald's on the corner. It had the red and white tiles and yellow arches. Grants used to sell dyed chicks at Easter. My sister accidentally stepped on hers. They stopped, because it was cruelty to animals. Our house was torn down, a few years after, my parent fled to Merrillville. It was a drug house and someone got killed there. The city seemed safe in the fifties and sixties. At Christmas, downtown stay open later. It used to be like living in MAYBERRY! It was so beautiful, during the holidays. I wanted everything, as every kid does. Grants had toys in the basement. My biggest memory is Pete and Jim's hamburgers on I think 13th and Broadwy. Anyone remember that joint? We walked to and from school, so many memories. At Horace Mann there were two female gym teachers. Hew Ward and Kazmarxyck. If they liked you, you were lucky. They picked and chose. HewWard physically put her hands on a Black girl, and violently tried shoving her in the water, the pool, during gym. It was disgusting. I despised her, after that. Today, the girl would win a law suit. That is my worst memory at school. The poor kid was holding on to the side of the pool for dear life! So white wasn't always right. I still love Gary. For me, it is in my DNA. It helped shape me.
