Fall Attic Repair project.

Years ago, we had a plumbing roof jack leak and did some damage to the ceiling. The damage from underneath was minimal, just some missing popcorn texture and a little staining.

Recently, more popcorn started to fall from the ceiling, so back in late July, I went up and moved insulation around to view the damage. My goodness, it was virtually to the finish paper in some spots, so I figured since we were getting our roof replaced and after it cooled off, I’d go up and make repairs.

I used 5-minute hot mud to fill the holes and cracks, then followed up with a coat of general-purpose mud. I’ll go up again in a few days and put a couple of coats of waterproofing paint on it.

I’ll try my luck with the popcorn repairs underneath in a week or so. Likely, I’ll have to scrape the entire ceiling, skim, and start from scratch. I can’t wait!

Dave hope you heal and recover quickly, I’ve had a three surgeries, collapsed lung and two separate hand surgeries (bad knife cuts when I worked in the slaughterhouse) but never a hernia.

I’m debating what to do with that ceiling section, it’s the master bath and since it’s isolated and not very big. Likely I’ll experiment with the popcorn first, hate it and scrape it and go flat or even knockdown. Like Jim said I don’t like it but it’s very popular and everywhere here in the central Midwest. Ouch.
Our MN homes all had this popcorn texture. I despised it.

Sounds like a popcorn removal opportunity. While we have it in the garage and on the front porch ceiling, there isn't any of the much-maligned-on-HGTV stuff in our house. I'm not sure how much I'd spend to remove it, though.

I'm not handy or adventurous when it comes to home repairs and upgrades. Right now I'm recovering from hernia surgery, so grounded from making the slightest attempt. Timing naturally being what it is, out of the blue the circuit with our basement ceiling lights started tripping. An electrician (sorry it's not you, Paul) is coming today to diagnose and correct.
