Summer Flowers

Quail Creek, AZ

A Peruvian Apple Cactus. It blooms during our hot summers. Flowers come out at night, the blooms wilt quickly in the daytime heat and are pretty much gone by noon.
This photo captures the flower, the burnt out flowers, and the buds of flowers yet to come.

I have not seen the hummers on these flowers. I have seen lots of bees, though.
The flowers are only open in the morning when the hummers are up and about.
In my yard I have other bushes and flowers that attract them. The flowers are generally red or orange red, smaller, and shaped like tubes, like a honeysuckle.
Per Gemini - nocturnals like bats and moths will come to these flowers.

Basically yes. One night, and then they generally wither in the morning heat.
Their goal, though, is to produces fruit.

So, does each flower last for only one night and morning? That seems like a lot of metabolic work for such a short-lived flower. Pretty, though.
