16 Winter Survivors Swimming

Goldfish in our pond. The tree reflection aided with water transparency. There appear to be eight fish, so all made it through. A couple of them ducked into the mud/leaves for safety. Apparently, their memories are too short to remember the guy who usually feeds them (too early to start that).

Gases build up under the ice and poison them. I use a Pond Breather to maintain an opening and bring in some fresh air. It uses a lot less electricity than a pump or heater. I could probably start the waterfall again but haven't had the hour or two of decent daylight weather to do it. Ideally, I'd have use of a hose. Soon enough.

Thanks, Jim, that's pretty interesting t hat they can suffocate. Hummmm, I'm sure it is true...but I have to think on it. Best Wishes, Traveller

Re fish - I am pretty sure they don't hibernate. They can, however suffocate. In many MN ponds this size years ago when the ice would get really thick, the fish would die because of lack of oxygen. On bigger ponds people would install pumps to keep the water circulating and drawing in more oxygen.

Yeah, pretty sad. I've been watching them on the webcam occasionally. I wonder how often eagles raise three chicks to maturity.

While their metabolism gets really slow, I don't think fish hibernate. I sometimes see them all together at the bottom of the pond.
