The "gray support structure" is part of the landscape light the rose was under and provided almost perfect illumination. The material hanging over the blossom is likely the remains of a spider's nest in the lamp housing. A crew of tufted titmice (example in pending) had gone light-to-light earlier that day relieving them of edible material.
