I had a similar, but different problem like this last week. We were at the Carlsbad Caverns in NM. I tried to capture the grandeur of a couple of the big rooms - and to my eye I failed miserably. In addition to poor lighting, there were just too many structures (stalactites, stalagmites, veils, etc) which dragged my eye around. Just a crowded mess.
I am trying now to somewhat isolate some structures with masking and blurring the background. I can do it technically, but not artistically very well.
