09 First Hatch

Quail Creek, AZ

A momma quail and her first hatch came through the wash behind me late this afternoon. Maybe 8 chicks. They were moving pretty quickly.

T - the food chain is nature's way of keeping the proper balance. Man messes it up.

That's a pretty rough story you are telling....I'm not saying it is not true...but in some ways it still shocks me. I suppose it is good to be reminded of this. Traveller

Yes, you will see the flock dwindle pretty quickly. In our wash I have seen hawks, owls, road runners, bob cat, and coyote, all of whom feed on the small birds.
It is amazing that any survive.
But the quail will have a couple of more sets of young before summer hits.
And snakes and roadrunners seek out the eggs.

I’m with Dave, 2 votes now!
I imagine they are easy prey for hawks and other birds of prey. Paul
