Sport mode makes sense. I needed it more for engine braking than for pep. I looked for paddles or some other way to shift manually and was relieved when the transmission did it for me. Riding the brakes would have been awful.

My Fiat Spider has sport mode, which improves throttle response and relaxes the traction control and stability control. My Alfa Giulia calls it dynamic mode, and it also stiffens the suspension and makes the transmission shift more aggressively.

We spent our time in Indian Springs and Palm Desert (only went to Palm Springs itself to catch our flight home). There are several cities that combine to create a sprawling desert metropolis. I would probably have liked it more fifty years ago.

If the Edge is like my Ranger the S on the shifter is “Sport Mode” it certainly gives it some pep in the step. Especially if I’m running premium or mid grade fuel. Sport mode will also override the auto stop start mode which I and many others despise. Paul

I want to visit Palm Springs one of these days.
This photo is certainly inviting.

We had a Ford Edge from Budget with about 24,000 miles (I didn't check the model year). It was an XLT and had the Ecoboost engine. A button labeled 'S' in the middle of the rotary shifter gave decent engine braking down the grades.

I have to ask, what kind of rental car did you get for the trip? Paul

This was a quick trip to watch some tennis. We actually flew into San Diego, where we went to the zoo and visited with friends we'd made in December in Antarctica. The drive from San Diego to the Palm Springs area was fun. For me.
