I suspect I'll shoot this again tomorrow...that center bottom smudge thingy appears in all frames but there is no smudge on the lens...hummm...it is somehow reflecting back up from the ground in some way

I have read reports where oil or grease from the mirror mechanism came loose and got on the sensor. Very rare but has happened in the past. Step one is try a different lens and reshoot the same scene. Paul

Alastair - my guess as well. I have never seen a spot/smudge on the sensor that looks like what T is showing. You would have to deliberately flip the mirror up and wipe or touch the sensor with a finger or dirty swab. Jim

I guess I match your level of being anal. I am the same way about changing lenses, and as a result have only had to clean my sensor once in the last 2 years. Jim

I was pretty anal and always stored my lenses with both front and rear lens caps on and if I had a lens bag or case it was in it if not on the camera. I can’t count the number of times I’ve seen people that never put their lens caps on or just stuffed them open in a gear bag or sitting on a table/shelf when not in use. Paul

Paul may be right. And you should check your sensor by changing lens. Smudges don't reflect. Also shoot the sky at f/22 or more and check for sensor contamination. Jim

Could the smudge be on the back glass of the lens instead of the front? Paul
