I heard a similar joke about bank vice presidents, Alastair.
Maybe they're not as numerous now as they were then.
There are plenty of areas of our lawn that have plants other than grass.

Associate Dean, Paul? I have a colleague who spent a few years as an Associate Dean. He loved to tell jokes about university administrators. This is my favorite: one day the office manager in the Dean’s office gets a phone call from an irate professor, who says he’s furious about some (probably entirely trivial) matter, and he needs to speak to an administrator. He adds “I’ll accept nothing lower than an Associate Dean”, to which the office manager replies, “My good sir, there is nothing lower than an Associate Dean”.

I remember the year I lived in Tucson (1999-2000) with much fondness. The house we lived in had no grass, and only native (to the SW) plants. Even back then, there was a lot of talk about the overuse of water for grass (including golf courses), and the fact that the city itself was sinking every year, because of the water table shrinking.

Actually, here in the SW we are moving away from grass lawns - they use too much water. Almost all of Tucson and surrounding areas have no decorative grass. Golf courses are an exception.

We use a lot of crushed rock, no water, and a good pre-emergent along with roundup during the year. We have the occasional small tree or bush in a yard with a drip system. What lives and blooms in the desert stays in the desert.

I love the friendly banter dialog we’ve got going here. I would expect no less from Alastair and if I was a student in his class I’m sure I would be receiving a failing grade and be referred to the associate Dean’s office. Again! 😉

Weeds have a perfect place in this world and are a huge part of nature’s system just NOT IN MY YARD! 2-4-D to the rescue. I just put down my 2nd application of fertilizer and pre emergent. Remember I have to, I must keep pace with Chuck across the street and of course Randy 2 houses north of me. Paul

You know, the difference between 'grass' and 'weeds' is just a matter of perspective, and custom. I think it's high time we move beyond the lawn hierarchy and value all living plant matter equally. We should start a movement to combat the oppressive marginalization of the much maligned weed. Weed the World, I say.

Paul - cruel :-)
There might be some actual grass in this photo.

Mr. T if this is your lawn please PM me I want to introduce you to your new BFF, his name is 2-4-D. He is highly effective and is quite popular, I had him stop by for a visit a few weeks back myself. He might need to return for a little mop up session tho.
