Heritage Lake

Meet my friend Dave, he wanted to go to the heavily wooded lake and park a few miles to the south so he can visit his buddies Jim, Al, T and Jet. Since I’m a friendly kind of guy I obliged. I think a few of their female companions might be joining them soon.

BTW, how does one determine the sex of a squirrel? Paul

Yes, it was a cat. I wondered whether it had been feasting on the kittens dumped along Old Ballard Road. My 135 f/2 is like your nifty fifty. Sometimes it locks on, and sometimes it doesn't. We see coyotes from time-to-time. They've never been visible in our yard for the amount of time a lens change takes (unless said lens is already on one's person).

What was the big black wild thing? A huge cat? Hummm

Be that as it may, I tried to photograph a wild coyote wandering in my neighborhood the other day, (probably looking for cats or smaller dogs to eat), it was bright afternoon but my 1.8 nifty fifty could not find a focus on a moving target....(hummm...damn!) and while I very quickly mounted my 70~200....he was entirely gone, or hiding or...damned if I know, they are like devils to catch up with...like in the Usual Suspects...Poof, he was gone.

Years ago I gained the nickname "Trapper Dave". I was living outside of Charlottesville, Virginia and the road our house was on was a popular drop-off spot for unwanted pets, particularly kittens. I borrowed a trap from the county animal agency and brought them a lot of adoption-age kitties. Once I caught something big, black, and very wild. It reminded me of a miniature version of the panther in the movie "cat people". When I brought it to the animal shelter, all the other animals gave the trap a wide berth. Here in Michigan, my two targets are groundhogs/woodchucks and chipmunks. I usually release squirrels on-the-spot, though I sometime wonder whether the feisty red squirrels will try to exact revenge. I also catch opossums and raccoons. The former gets released, while the latter gets a ride. I rarely photograph the trapped critters any longer. I hope they don't mind. Actually, I don't care.

Hun, very interesting and humane of you...good guy that you are. BTW, I have no Idea who Steve Tagupa is or why he is stealing my lines...lol. But I let people be.

Let me approach a different subject...I just finished watching Tangerine, a movie shot entirely on an Apple 5s...amazing. It won all kinds of awards back in 2015 and made a million bucks.

Alas, the movie is about one Christmas eve in the lives of two trans-gender prostitutes in Los Angeles...a delicate subject which is probably why I have avoided it for 7 years...but it really was excellent...happy and sad and cruel and terrible...just like real life.

There is a hedero sexual married man at the center of the movie also...ahhh, crap, there are good reasons to hate mother in laws...in any case this is not a family friendly movie, or even maybe with a significant other....so if you do see it...be cautious.

Still, a whole movie shot on an Apple 5s, amazing, part of the reason I had it on in the background when I worked tonight.

Kind of an odd comment, but there you have it. T

We were a hunting family so I remember having rabbit and squirrel as a youth, pheasant and quail when they were in season.

It’s a new cage, the population has gotten out of hand recently and causing trouble. The neighbors to the north used to capture and relocate them because they had a big problem with them doing serious damage including getting into their attic but they moved so I took up the task.

I had read where they love peanuts and peanut butter so I started with that. The ants were a fan but not the squirrels so after a week I tried a different approach and switched to cherry tomatoes and strawberries. Nope! Next I picked up a bag of wild bird seed with lots of sunflower seeds in it and that they can’t seem to resist. Paul

PS This is a very clean capture....I guess, I guess, both photographically and mechanically cage-wise. Traveller

Squirrels have small.ish (but maybe large for a Squirrel), exterior furry testicles. I am probably remembering 70 years ago...but on and off I lived on a farm and squirrel was part of Eastern Kentucky cuisine. (further, if I remember correctly, I had a small .22 caliber rifle to bring food home). T
