Waiting on Lightning

The first real monsoon storm came through this afternoon.
I set up my Canon 80D with a lightning detector on it, and let it rip for about an hour.
I occasionally moved it around to shoot the edges of the storms where the lightning seems to occur the most.
But eventually the rain and wind drove me in. You can see the rain drops on the bricks.

I have not gone up into Madera Canyon to shoot lightning. First, I don't want to get that close, and second, I would prefer to have the mountains as a backdrop to the lightning.

As for weather, I have gone up to shoot a fresh snowfall. I also intend to go up after or during a heavy rain to see if I can get good shots of the "flash floods" that occur.

I see your neighbor is part of the Weather Underground network, I just added his station to my list. Have you gone up into the canyon to attempt weather and lightning photography? I distinctly remember how fascinating it was to watch the thunderheads form and move across the range and valley when I wired my neighbors house he built in the mountains north of Woodland Park Co in the early 1990s. It was jaw dropping, I had a hard time staying focused on work when they popped up. That and when the jets from the Air Force Academyflew over. Paul.

I started out just at the outside edge of the patio. My neighbor has an online weather station, so I get my details from him. At 3:30, it was 103 deg, no wind. That was about the time I went out and set up. The next posted shot was at 4:13
At 4:40, just before this photo, it was 84 deg, winds of 17 mph, and we just had a strong gust of 27 mph. I was actually hanging on to the tripod then.
The winds and the beginning rain drove me further back under the patio roof.
A few minutes after this, it started to pour, with a wind, so I went inside. The lightning within sight had stopped.

Cool, I like these kind of setup shots. I see you were under the safety of your covered patio, I also noticed your landscape lights were on the storm must have made it real dark. Paul
