I agree - no frame is ever truly wasted. And this single shot came out very well and very sharp, even at 1/160 sec. A larger DOF would have made the petal edges a bit sharper, but I like that the eye is drawn to the purple center. Sharper petals would have made my eye wander more.
As for me, I often use M mode, and just twirl the dials as I am hovering over the flower.
Then I pick one.
I’m intrigued by your comment “wasted a frame”. I didn’t think there was such a thing as frame wasting with digital. Unless of course you have a very small SD card. Paul
Yes, this is Post Processing...but is interesting to me on a Question with Dave, & Jim on how to just shoot away with changing settings....I was thinking about them when I shot this....in heavy wind, darkening night approaching, the flower bobbing around....but I said, what the heck and wasted a single frame on it....whereas normally I'd shot several at differing f-stops....but sometimes a single shot is sufficient.
I was surprised when I got home and it looks pretty good even after braking my rule to shoot a bunch...so I could pick the best and delete the rest.
Sometimes the shot just works without insurance.

Iris to know if the dark background is natural or the result of post processing.
