I shot some more today, but the lovely white petals are no longer available as a backdrop (action has shifted to the raspberries, and they are delicious).

You still need the high shutter speed. For landed bees, I find 1/500 sec is pretty good. Then the ISO goes up.

How 'bout my f/22 "Faded Glory", Jim? Shutter speed won out over aperture here. Yes, one wing is in better focus than the other. I'll see if I get another chance and try your recommendation.

With this lens, I still prefer the higher DOF you get with the smaller apertures, like f/16, followed by noise reduction because of a higher ISO.
